My husband and I have been spending a lot of time in Twain, CA. The Feather River runs along our property line from east to west, and we own a vacation rental there. Since this is a new venture for us, we have been busy learning the ins and outs of Airbnb. This is the first summer we have booked guests and it’s exciting. It’s also time consuming to furnish a home, write a guide book for visitors, and cleaning instructions for a new housekeeper.
One morning I took some time to write a poem. What better place than on our back porch overlooking the river? It’s a lovely spot to write and listen to nature. While I ate, I tried to imagine what a river would say to me.
This morning I ate breakfast by the river
Between bites of scrambled eggs and toast
I translated the sound of water rushing to the sea
Flow with me
I imagined myself astride a willow stick
the current holding me
water gurgling and whooshing
as I twirled and dipped
I clung to my twig but soon
it became a burden
My body went slack with relief
It no longer mattered if I hung on
The twig continued without me
squeezed through rocks
and snagged on a fallen tree
The river spoke again as only water can
Flow with me
Something shifted as this became
my answer for everything
