About The Party
Happy New Year! I’m posting a festive poem from my recent book, Light the Way. What I love most about writing poetry is word play.
The following is a quote written by Gary Silva in his endorsement of my book. He was the Napa County Poet Laureate in 2008, and he describes my word play in more poetic terms.
Many poems play on the sounds of language such as the slightly whimsical “The Party,” with its rich use of consonance, assonance, and alliteration.
If you enjoy writing poetry I would advise you to beware of word play in your classroom assignments. Do not go overboard! I made this mistake several years ago. I not only flew overboard. I carried myself out to sea! My poem went on for several stanzas, and it sounded great to my ear as well as receiving great laughs from fellow students.
Unfortunately, the teacher didn’t laugh. Her comment: Okay Barbara, cut it out with the alliteration. This poem is plain silly!

People mingling
floating fizzling
bubbling bursting
steadily settling
finally flattening

This is such a fun little poem. Thanks for giving us a little of the history behind it, and happy new year to you!
Thanks, Amber. Fun to write also, once I had the metaphor of soda pop.
This made me smile! Another winner 🙂
