Happy Valentine’s Day! For this poem I used a one word prompt from a random word I selected in a book, Eyes. I also thought it would be fun to incorporate lyrics from songs about eyes I listened to over the years. Music stirs memories. Each song included here is a memory about a time in my life beginning with my best friend inspiring me to join a school choir and ending with a memory about finding love.
Enough for Me
In middle school
Candy Carlson said
I like your eyes
They’re dark and sparkly
when you smile
A petit girl
blond hair in a bob
inspired me
to sing with
The Chansonettes
On a clear day
rise and look around you
and you’ll see who you are
That’s when I started
to notice
songs about eyes
One day, Alfie, my date
told me I was the Girl with Far-away Eyes
I asked him What’s it all about, Alfie?
Between my distraction
and his confusion
our relationship fell flat
When I met my husband
and became his Brown-eyed Girl
I asked him
Do you remember when we used to sing
Beatle songs?
He took out his guitar
And sang
Close your eyes and I’ll kiss you
Tomorrow I’ll miss you
Remember I’ll always be true
That was enough for me
Nice memories
Yes. Thanks, Nan!
