Jim, Whitney, and Riley.
This year we have a new father in our family, my son, Jim. Our granddaughter, Riley, is two months old and she recently went on her first beach trip! Although my father has been gone now for many years, he would have been proud of Jim and pleased to see him with his own family enjoying the ocean together.
As a little girl, I loved spending time with Dad. The beach was one of our favorite places to dream the day away.
For Father
Once at the beach
we spread straw mats
You rested
while I shoveled sand
filling and spilling my pail
until your eyes closed
A breeze chilled me
and I lay down too
Covered us both
with my mat
but the wind flapped it
like a sail
I grabbed one end
and you the other
Together we swayed in
white-capped waves
until the chuckles
of gulls woke us
With you I felt safe
always
