Woman Holding Asparagus
I’m wearing a floral print dress
Pearls around my neck
The white ivory bracelet a gift
from my husband
He bought it in an antique shop
I am standing in my sister-in-law’s kitchen
holding a spear of asparagus
smiling for the camera
Perhaps the photographer asks, What’s for dinner?
I brought asparagus, I say
I wish I knew more details about the day
All I know is the young woman is me
and she appears to be happy
Asparagus always makes smile.
Must be the way it rolls off the tongue–
the word and the vegie.
Thanks, Elaine. It was an odd picture with the asparagus so I had to write about it. Glad you found the poem fun.
Funny and it was good
Thanks, Dave. Funny, eh?? Glad you liked the poem.
In an email from Leonore Wilson
YOU are absolutely stunning!! Oh and I adore this poem. It is beautiful and sad at the same time. That last line is a clincher! More poems, more poems. And publish tis one. xo xo
Thanks, Leonore for your lovely comment. It’s funny how readers interpret poems in their own way. I wouldn’t have caught the touch of sadness, but then again a lot of my poems hint at a bit of sadness. it’s an emotion that surfaces easily.
Ivory bracelet and pearls. Yes, didn’t we all? What did you do with the ivory? Mine is passed off as ‘bone.’ Lue bought it for me at the 1984 Olympics rowing contest in Ojai. Memories are made of such things.
Thanks, Aunt Pat. I still have the bracelet and wear it often. It’s a treasure.
Love this poem and the photo. Thank you for sharing this one.
Thanks, Patsy. Glad you enjoyed the post.
